I’ll Take A Bite Of That

posted in: Church, Culture | 14,150

There is a reason we follow recipes, to make something that is good and palatable, and also mostly because certain ingredients do not mix. One may change the type of cheese, or use almond milk instead of cow milk in a recipe. Because some ingredients may be different, they do not ruin the final product. It just gives it a different flavor. However, you may not replace the flower in pancakes with baking soda, because you would not end up with pancakes.

In the same way we must ensure we do not mix in outside worship of idols with the true worship of God. “Well”, one might add, “I only worship God”. Yes, by everything you understand you would believe that, but here lies my point. The worship of idols can sneak into the worship of God without it being obvious to us. Idols don’t always look like little brass statues that you can place on the mantle, though some of them might stick on the car window.

An idol that stands out is easily defeated, but one that slowly works its way in becomes natural and part of a culture. The mixing of idol worship and the worship of God may not seem distasteful to us, but is grossly unpalatable to God. This is where we come to the story of Balaam and Balak. In the book of numbers we find Balak, who was king over Moab, in fear of the Jews. He sends after Balaam knowing that “he whom you bless is blessed, and he whom you curse is cursed”(Numbers 22:6). However, God warns Balaam to only speak what he is told. This does not go over well with Balak since Balaam ends up blessing Israel three times. Chapter 24 ends with Balaam telling what was to happen in the days to come and then vs. 25 of chapter 24 says “Then Balaam arose and departed and returned to his place, and Balak also went his way”.

The next chapter begins with the Israelites playing the harlot with the daughters of Moab, feasting on food sacrificed to idols and bowing to them as well. So the question is what happened? Here was a mighty nation moving along and following God’s plan and all of sudden they are joined to Baal of Peor. We find the rest of the story of Balak and Balaam in Revelation 2:12-17.

Balaam could not curse the people; however at some point he taught Balak how to trip them up. The verse says to place a “stumbling block” in front of them. Balak placed food sacrificed to idols in front of them to eat and enticed them to commit acts of immorality. This false worship and immorality led to Numbers chapter 25 in which the Lord became angry with Israel.

So why did Israel not reject the food and worship of Baal? Simply put, the food looked good and the women were pretty. “And if all I have to do is bow, then I get hot food and hot ladies… I mean this is their culture and I want to be seen as relevant, besides I still observe the Sabbath”. These things don’t seem so wrong, at least after the 3rd and 4th time. The word for “stumbling block” could also mean “snare”. Those that hunt and fish know you don’t catch prey if the bait doesn’t look enticing and the snare or stumbling block is visible. One trips over the “block” because their eyes are focused somewhere else; they don’t see it for what it is.

So what does this mean for us? We are smart people and we have access to more information than a bunch of folks running around in the desert. But knowledge is not as valuable as wisdom. Knowledge knows what it is we do, and where we go, and where we spend our time and money. Wisdom tells us why we do it. Godly wisdom is the key in understanding which items in our lives are idols and which are true worship and which ones need to be prayed about further.

So now we come to the Church in America, which is more accurately the American Church. So what is it, you might ask, that I am getting at? That the idols have crept into the church, which means there are those of us that worship things other than or along with God. The problem is the idols are different for each of us. (James 1:14) We can worship our sexuality, our “cause” be it pro or anti this and that, or even our politics. A person running for office often becomes our savior if we are not careful. “He/she will fix everything, if we can just get them elected.” We can even begin to praise our government, singing its praises in a worship service. We sacrifice our Saturdays to give honor to our favorite sports teams, and spend our weekday nights at ball parks in service to sports.

Now is it wrong to be pro or anti this and that? Is it wrong to want good leaders? Is it wrong to watch sports and let your kids play them? Depends on what you are searching for. You see the problem is not with the meat. All things are made clean and we know that there are no other gods. However, our desire to have those “meats” drives us to compromise and worship the idols that are associated with them. There is nothing wrong with a child playing baseball; it is when the game becomes the desire of our heart, or when we praise our nation as though it is our savior. It is when we miss where the meat comes from that we are led astray. We believe that the idol provides the meat we desire, whether it be peace, justice, happiness, or protection. These things are to be sought from God. Dead idols can do nothing for us.

This brings us back to us, the church. When we are enticed by the things of the world, we must be careful that they do not become the object of our affection. Because when they do, we will mix them in our true worship. The idols will compete with our worship of God and if not thrown down we will bow our knee to them and give Sunday lip service to the one true God.

‘A short and significant relationship’: How a piano in a pickup builds connections
Metamask

Dozens of internationally renowned recording artists give concerts in Vegas every year, but the musician who connects best with people might be a local troubadour who improvises on a piano in the back of his pickup.

The maestro, Danny Kean, calls his setup The Traveling Piano, and he has traversed North America sharing music for nearly 20 years.

Kean’s home base is Las Vegas now, and every time he plays, he invites passersby to climb aboard the truck and tickle the ivory for themselves. Even if people are shy or say they can’t do it, Kean usually convinces them to give it a try, inspiring total strangers to express themselves through the common language of music.

He estimates more than 100,000 people have played his piano since 2006.

For most of these impromptu virtuosos, the experience is cathartic — many of them step down from the truck in tears. For Kean, 69, the encounters nourish his soul.

“I enjoy sharing my music with others, but I enjoy having others share theirs with me just as much,” he said. “My goal is to connect with others by creating a short and significant relationship. Music is a great facilitator for that in every way and on every level.”

Kean does not accept fees or tips for these musical awakenings, giving away time and energy for nothing in return. He practices philanthropy in other ways, too, providing food and other necessities for the burgeoning population of unhoused individuals in downtown Las Vegas and around the Las Vegas Valley.

“I love the idea of strangers becoming less afraid of each other,” he said. “This love for humanity drives me to keep doing good.”

He thought the guy he met on vacation was just a fling. He turned out to be the love of his life
Pancakeswap
Guillermo Barrantes relationship with Larry Mock was supposed to begin and end in Palm Springs.

It was a “casual, brief encounter.” A vacation dalliance that only lasted half a day.

“It was just so casual, so easily nothing could have happened from it,” Guillermo tells CNN Travel. “We could have walked away and just had our lives separate. But of course that didn’t happen, because it wasn’t meant to be that way. It was meant to be the way that it was. That it is.”

It all started in summer 2013. Guillermo – then in his early 40s – was on vacation in the California resort city of Palm Springs. He was in a phase of life where, he says, he was prioritizing himself, and wasn’t interested in long term romance.

“I thrived in being by myself, in traveling by myself, in having dinner by myself – I loved all of that so much,” says Guillermo, who lived in Boston, Massachusetts at the time.

“I wanted no commitment, I wanted no emotional entanglement of any kind. I wanted to have fun, get to know myself. And it was in that mode that I met Larry, when I wasn’t really looking.”

During the vacation in Palm Springs, Guillermo was staying at a friend’s apartment, and while the friend worked during the day, Guillermo passed his time at a “run-down, no-frills” resort a couple of blocks away.

“You could just pay for a day pass, they’d give you a towel, and you could be in the pool and use their bar,” he recalls.

One day, as he was walking the palm tree-lined streets to the resort, Guillermo swiped right on a guy on a dating app – Larry Mock, mid-40s, friendly smile. The two men exchanged a few messages back and forth. Larry said he was also on vacation in Palm Springs, staying in the resort Guillermo kept frequenting.

They arranged to meet there for a drink by the pool. Guillermo was looking forward to meeting Larry, expecting “some casual fun.”

Then, when Guillermo and Larry met, there was “chemistry” right away. Guillermo calls their connection “magnetic.”

“My impression of Larry: sexy, handsome and warm,” he recalls.

Bug-bitten oolong? The secret behind Taiwan’s rare honey-flavored tea — and where to enjoy it
Ethena

As the leaves rustle atop the hills in Nantou, Taiwan’s largest tea-producing area, the farm suddenly comes alive, millions of tiny green bugs hopping into the air.

While many farmers might frown at the sight of these pests munching on their crops, Lee Ming-cheng, a third-generation tea farmer and maker, can’t hide the broad smile on his sun-kissed face.

This “green insect fog,” as locals call it, is a sign they’ll have a good harvest of Gui Fei Oolong (also known as Honey Flavor Dong Ding Oolong or Concubine Oolong), a special tea that’s prized for offering a hint of honey flavor.

And it’s these endemic insects, called Jacobiasca formosana, or tea jassids, that are to thank for it.

When the jassids feed, the leaves go into defensive mode and produce a sweetened hormone that tastes and smells like honey, creating one of the world’s most intriguing teas: mixiang cha, or honey-fragrance tea.

The bug-bitten leaves are oxidized and roasted to create a variety of beverages. There’s mixiang black tea (made with fully oxidized leaves) and oolong teas like Oriental Beauty (partially oxidized and not roasted) and the previously mentioned Concubine Tea (partially oxidized and roasted), to name a few.

Unlike Taiwan’s ubiquitous bubble tea, mixiang tea is still highly limited and largely off-the-radar. But what was once a hidden gem among serious tea lovers is now starting to gain international attention.

SHANGHAI, Dec 6 (Reuters) – The yuan was little changed on Friday against the dollar, but
is headed for its tenth straight weekly loss amid concerns
that new tariff threatened by President-elect Donald Trump
will heighten strains on the struggling Chinese economy.

Analysts expect the dollar to remain firm as Trump’s policies are expected to drive up U.S.
inflation, but they believe Beijing will prevent the yuan from falling too much.
“We anticipate some depreciation pressure in an expected strong dollar environment,” Lynn Song, Greater China chief economist at ING, said in a note.

However, “we don’t expect an intentional large-scale depreciation and think the yuan will remain a low-volatility currency vis-à-vis most other Asian currencies.” The yuan was changing hands at 7.2549 per dollar around
midday, little moved from the previous close.

Although the currency has rebounded from a one-year
low of 7.2996 hit on Tuesday, it is poised to register its longest weekly losing streak since 2018.

The dollar index fell to one-week low overnight and “the USD’s consolidation should unwind the upside pressure building” in the yuan,
aided by ongoing attempts by China’s central bank to restrain its decline, said Alvin Tan, strategist at RBC Capital Markets.

Recent data has painted a mixed picture of China’s economic recovery,
with manufacturing activities improving, but property sales in many Chinese cities remaining weak.
China’s “economic landscape is unarguably dull, and the absence of excitement is perhaps the most salient feature,” said
John Browning, managing director of BANDS Financial.
He doesn’t expect huge stimulus to be announced during next week’s Central Economic Work Conference, as “Beijing’s largesse will be reserved until after Trump is restored to the White House and the trade war formally begins.” Top
policymakers will gather at the conference to agree
on major economic goals for next year.

But the target for 2025 growth, one of the most closely-watched indicators globally for clues of Beijing’s near-term policy intentions, likely will not
be officially announced until an annual parliament meeting in March.

During Trump’s first term as president, the yuan weakened
about 5% against the dollar after the initial round of U.S.

tariffs on Chinese goods in 2018, and fell another 1.5% a year later
when trade tensions escalated. Growth worries and expectations of further monetary easing by Beijing pushed China’s 10-year treasury yields below 2%
to record lows this week, worsening the yield disadvantage against the
U.S., and exerting downward pressure on the yuan. ING’s Song expects the onshore
yuan to move within a band between 7.00-7.40 per dollar, but could fall further
to 7.50 “if tariffs come in earlier or more aggressive than our forecasts.” LEVELS AT 03:47 GMT GMT INSTRUME CURRENT UP/DOWN( % CHANGE DAY’S DAY’S LOW NT vs USD -) VS.

The Australian city that became a global food and drink powerhouse
первый анальный секс
Sydney or Melbourne? It’s the great Australian city debate, one which pits the commerce, business and money of Sydney against cultural, arts-loving, coffee-drinking Melbourne.

While picking one can be tricky, there’s no denying that Australia’s second city, home to 5.2 million people, has a charm all of its own.

Melburnians (never Melbournites) get to enjoy a place where nature is close by, urban delights are readily available and the food and drink scene isn’t just the best in Australia, but also one of the finest in the world.
There’s no better way to start a trip to Melbourne than with a proper cup of coffee. Coffee is serious stuff here, with no room for a weak, burnt or flavorless brew. The history of coffee in Melbourne goes back to the years after World War II, when Italian immigrants arrived and brought their machines with them.

Within 30 years, a thriving cafe scene had developed and, as the 21st century dawned, the city had become the epicenter of a new global coffee culture. The iconic Pellegrini’s on Bourke Street and Mario’s in the Fitzroy neighborhood are the best old-school hangouts, while Market Lane helped lead the way in bringing Melbourne’s modern-day coffee scene to the masses.
Kate Reid is the best person to speak with about Melbourne’s coffee obsession. The founder of Lune Croissanterie, she was once a Formula 1 design engineer and has brought her expertise and precision to crafting the world’s best croissant, as well as knowing how to brew a coffee, and specifically a flat white, just the way it should be.

“Good coffee is just ingrained in everyday culture for every single Melburnian now,” says Reid. “I think that that peak of pretentious specialty coffee has come and gone, and now it’s just come down to a level of a really high standard everywhere.”

That’s clear when she pours a flat white. Describing herself as a perfectionist, the way she froths the milk and tends to the cup is a sight to behold.

Tim Dillon, who makes a brief appearance in Joker: Folie à Deux, has

The follow-up to the Oscar-winning 2019 film, starring
Joaquin Phoenix as Arthur Fleck (Joker) and Lady Gaga as Lee Quinzel (Harley Quinn), faced negative reviews from critics before
its October 4 release and flopped at the box office.

Tim, 39, who played a guard at Arkham Asylum in the movie, said Todd
Philips’s new film has ‘no plot’ and admitted he knew it was ‘going to bomb’ while filming.

Speaking on The Joe Rogan Experience podcast, Tim said: ‘It’s the worst film ever made.

‘I think what happened, after the first Joker,
there was a lot of talk like, ‘Oh, this was loved by
incels. This was loved by the wrong kinds of people. This sent the wrong kind
of message. Male rage! Nihilism! All these think pieces.

Tim Dillon, who makes a brief appearance in Joker: Folie
à Deux, has described the new sequel as ‘terrible’ and ‘the worst film ever made’

The follow-up to the Oscar-winning 2019 film, starring Joaquin Phoenix as
Arthur Fleck (Joker) and Lady Gaga as Lee Quinzel (Harley Quinn),
faced negative reviews from critics before its October 4 release and flopped at the box office

‘And then I think, ‘What if we went the other way,’ and now they have Joaquin Phoenix and Lady Gaga tap dancing
to a point where it’s insane.’

He continued: ‘It has no plot. We would sit there, me
and these other guys were all dressed in these security outfits because
we’re working at the Arkham Asylum, and I would turn to one of them and we’d hear this crap and I’d go, ‘What the f*** is
this?’ And they’d go, ‘This is going to bomb, man.’ I go, ‘This
is the worst thing I’ve ever seen.’

‘We were talking about it at lunch, and we’d go, ‘What is the plot?
Is there a plot? I don’t know, I think he falls in love with her in the prison?’ It’s not even hate-watchable.
That’s how terrible it is.’

Despite the negative reviews a number of fans of the sequel took to social media
after its release last month to defend the sequel to
Todd Phillips’ 2019 motion picture.

The film debuted to a paltry $40 million at the domestic box office, good enough for the weekend’s top spot, but less than projections, and half that of its predecessor.

Amid the early returns, a number of fans took up
for the movie and its cinematic depth, in breaking away from the cookie cutter nature of
sequels to introduce a musical element not present in the first film,
with Lady Gaga joining the franchise.

‘Joker 2 was amazing,’ one user said, adding that it
was ‘100% as divisive as people are making it out to be.

I love that the film didn’t try to be a traditional sequel, and fully committed
to the storytelling they presented. It never deviated
to be a film full of Easter eggs or any other crowd pleasing
aspects.’

Another user said, ‘I kinda loved Joker 2. I loved how it was structured as a meta-exploration of the first film’s fandom
and the musical elements were a lot of fun.’

Todd Phillips‘ sequel has bombed, raking in just under $40 million at
the domestic box office, and receiving the lowest CinemaScore in comic book
movie history.

Gaga, 38, is reportedly confused at the lack of love for her
turn as Harleen Lee Quinzel, aka Harley Quinn, alongside Joaquin Phoenix, 49, as the Joker – a role that won him the best actor Oscar in 2019 – in the wake of the standing ovation it received at the Venice Film Festival last month.

‘Gaga is surprised by the response to Joker 2 and
is shocked that people don’t love it after the response it
received from critics before it premiered,’ a source exclusively told DailyMail.com.

‘She put so much heart into the movie and has so
much respect for the DC comics fan base.’

They added: ‘Her team is quietly looking at other projects they can roll out as they want to move on this from as quickly as possible.’

It comes after lead star Lady Gaga was left ‘disappointed’ at the immense flood of negative reactions to Joker:
Folie à Deux, with the singer’s team now keen to quickly push out other projects to help distract from the furor over the
film, insiders claim

But despite the lacklustre reception from fans, a second source claimed
she is not letting it deter her from returning to the big screen, with the singer said to be eyeing up a Quentin Tarantino movie.

‘She is disappointed that Joker is pretty much a bomb,’ they said.

‘She thought that this film could get her an Oscar nomination, especially since
the first film was such a success and Joaquin won an Oscar.

‘She would now like to land a role in Quentin Tarantino’s
next and final film. Nobody knows what that is going to be, but she
wants to audition.

‘She’s going to lobby hard to get a meeting with him once a script is presented, it
is a bucket list moment for her to be involved.’

US pop star Lady Gaga has taken on a track known best to Aussies as the opening theme to the iconic comedy series Kath
& Kim.

The song, originally written by Leslie Bricusse and Anthony Newley
for the 1964 stage musical The Roar Of The Greasepaint – The Smell Of The Crowd,
is performed by Gaga for her film Joker: Folie à Deux.

To most Australians, it is the bold and brassy version sung by Gina
Riley, who also plays Kimberly Diane ‘Kim’ Craig (née Day) in the legendary comedy.

Before being immortalised in to the fabric of Australian pop
culture, thanks to Gina’s  rendition, the song had been covered by the likes of Shirley Bassey in 1968
and Sammy Davis Jr in 1965.

And now, the Born This Way hitmaker has taken a stab at the track
– with the results markedly different to the brassy feel of the Kath
& Kim version.

Gaga’s take, which also features on her new album Harlequin, is a much
more  stripped back that builds to a crescendo thanks to rocking guitars.

Speaking to Today Extra about the track, Kath & Kim star Peter Rowsthorn joked that he was ‘constantly’ hounded by the US pop star regarding the track.

‘She’s constantly calling me, so I know she’s a
big fan,’ Pete, who play’s Kim’s on-again-off-again husband Brett in the series, said.

US pop star Lady Gaga has taken on a track known best to Aussies as the theme tune to the
iconic comedy series Kath & Kim for her film Joker: Folie à Deux

‘I said to Gaga, “If you want to do it, it’s up to you. I’m the fifth banana in this thing”.’

Peter went on to mention that he did have a favourite between the two renditions.

‘I believe the Gina Riley version, or the “Kim” version, is the
better version.’

The Today Show posted a short clip featuring the Gaga’s version over the Kath and
Kim title sequence to Instagram and viewers were quick to
issue their shock at the surprising cover version.

While some were quick to point out Shirley Bassey’s famous version, one fan said the song would always belong to Kath and Kim.

‘Who cares about Shirley it’s iconic because it’s
the Kath and Kim theme song,’ they wrote.

‘I cannot take Gaga seriously with this song hahahaha.’

Another did not hold back in their criticism of the Poke Face singer with: ‘Totally sucks.
Another flop of an album from Gaga. She’ll probably
ruin joker sequel too.’

Joaquin Phoenix encouraged Lady Gaga ‘to sing poorly’ in Joker sequel

Kath & Kim, written and performed by Gina Riley and Jane Turner, ran on the ABC
across three seasons from 2002 to 2005.

The lauded sit-com which also starred Magda Szubanski, Glenn Robbins and Peter Rowsthorn went
on to become one of Australia’s most beloved comedies.

The hit comedy also boasted a litany of high-profile guest stars including Kylie Minogue, Little
Britain’s Matt Lucas, Eric Bana, and cricket icon Shane Warne.

Gaga, whose birth name is Stefani Germanotta, stars as Harley opposite Joaquin’s Joker in the psychological thriller
musical.

However, the musical has received mixed reviews from critics, while fans took to social media to claim that

Lady Gaga is getting back to basics.

Following her panned performance in the flop movie Joker: Folie à Deux, the New York City native, 38, is releasing a single titled Disease,
set to be released Friday.

Diesase, the first of songs from her forthcoming seventh album, was teased Tuesday
on the Grammy-winning artist’s Instagram account, as she captioned the image: ‘DISEASE 10.25.’

In a teaser clip from the viewpoint of an approaching vehicle, the actress-singer,

Joker: Folie À Deux is branded ‘bleak’ and the ‘most disappointing follow-up’ by

The singer, whose hits include Bad Romance, Born This Way, Just Dance and Poker Face,
is headed back to her pop persona following the September release
of her album Harlequin, which was inspired by Joker: Folie à Deux.

Among the tracks on the album included two new songs, and standards such as
That’s Entertainment, That’s Life and Get Happy.

Like the film, it was not an initial commercial
success, marking her lowest ever entry for a full-length record on the Billboard 200 charts
at number 20.

Lady Gaga in the movie played the role of Harley Quinn opposite Joaquin Phoenix, who earned the Best Actor Oscar for his
performance in the franchise’s 2019 film Joker.

According to the outlet, Joker: Folie à Deux ‘could potentially lose $150
to $200 million’ despite studio insiders saying it would
break even.

The Warner Bros. film has made $192.2 million worldwide, with
$56.6 million in domestic box office revenue, according to Box Office Mojo.

Rubies are often referred to as the ‘king of gemstones’ and their
vibrant color – caused by the presence of chromium – is often associated with passion, love, and power.

The name ‘ruby’ comes from the Latin word ‘ruber’ which means red.

Rubies are incredibly sought after for their beauty and durability,
they are ranked 9 on the Mohs scale of hardness (qualitative scale that measures
the relative hardness of minerals and other materials by their resistance to scratching), second to diamonds.

Beyond their sparkle and strength, they have held cultural significance
for centuries.

Throughout history, rubies have been associated with nobility and wealth, often adorning the crowns of kings
and queens. They are also believed to bring good fortune and protection to their wearer.

According to Melee the Show founders Lauren Wolf and Rebecca Overmann, ruby jewelry is on the rise.

The fine jewelry trade show connects buyers and designers, with the next shows taking place in New York (February 1-3) and Tucson (February 5-7).

‘From bold gemstones to intricate craftsmanship, our designers bring rubies to life in ways that inspire and captivate,’ said the duo.

Anthony Lent, Fannie Thomas, Heather Guidero, Jake Matluck, Amali, Karin Jacobson, Marian Maurer and Ciara

PARIS (AP) – Not even a tense tête-à-tête in the gold medal game could spoil the vibe at Paris´ biggest
beach party.

Canada´s Brandie Wilkerson and Brazil´s Ana Patrícia got
into a finger-pointing shouting match across the net in the tiebreaking third set of the beach volleyball final of the Paris Olympics on Friday night.
The referee tried to keep the peace, but it was the Eiffel
Tower Stadium DJ who cooled tempers on the sand by playing
John Lennon´s “Imagine” over the PA system.

The players laughed and clapped. The crowd applauded and sang along.

Wilkerson was shown a yellow card.

The top-ranked Brazilians left with the gold medal.

“We`re competitors and we are fighting for the same thing: There´s only one gold medal,” Wilkerson said during a
post-match news conference in which the two laughed and jokingly
put up their fists as if they were going to brawl it out.

Gold medalists, Brazil’s Eduarda “Duda” Santos Lisboa, center left,
and Ana Patricia Silva Ramos, center right, pose for a selfie with, from left,
silver medalists, Canada’s Melissa Humana-Paredes and

“Immediately after the game, it´s all love and respect,” she said.
“We bring out the best in each other, and I´m honored to play against this team.”

Ana Patrícia and Duda rallied from an 11-5 deficit to take the
first-to-21, win-by-two first set 26-24, and Canada won the second 21-12.

Brazil opened up a 12-7 lead in the first-to-15 tiebreaker when, after a joust at the net,
Wilkerson and Ana Patrícia began pointing fingers at each other.

The second referee, the one at sand level, moved out to separate the
two players, but Wilkerson continued to argue and picked up a yellow card.
As the Brazilians got into position to serve for the next
point, the DJ began playing “Imagine,” the late Beatle’s song calling for
unity and peace.

The message resonated with the players.

“What a beautiful opportunity we have to play the finals under the Eiffel Tower against the best in the world,” Wilkerson said.
“Like, that, in of itself, is a win.”

Wilkerson told reporters afterward that it was all a misunderstanding: She was responding to her family,
cheering in the crowd behind the Brazilians, and Ana Patrícia thought Wilkerson was taunting her.

“We´re pretty amped up, partners are coming in, refs are coming in. So it was a bit of a mess,” Wilkerson said.
“But after the game, and even right when they came to shake our hands, still on the court, there was an immediate hug and just kind of like, `Hey, it´s all good.´”

When play resumed, it took Brazil only five more
points to finish off Wilkerson and Melissa Humana-Paredes,
kicking off a party the sport’s spiritual home hadn’t seen since hosting the 2016 Rio de Janeiro Games at Copacabana.
In Tokyo, the country was shut out at the Summer Games for the first time since beach volleyball
was added to the program in 1996.

Three years later, Brazil not only returned to the podium but climbed
to its top step.

With the Eiffel Tower’s strobes sparking in the background and yellow- and green-wearing fans singing and waving Brazilian flags, the country was awarded its first women’s gold since Atlanta.
(The United States, which had won four of the last five,
was shut out in both the men’s and women’s tournaments in Paris.)

After the medal ceremony, the Canadians and Brazilians – along with the bronze-winning Swiss – posed
for selfies together. Wilkerson and Ana Patrícia spoke to each other and hugged;
there may have even been an air kiss.

“It was a game thing,” Ana Patrícia said. “Everybody wants to win. But it happens. It´s everybody trying to win, but now everything is OK.”

Wilkerson and Humana-Paredes will return to
Canada with the country’s first beach volleyball medal since the men won bronze at the 1996 Atlanta Games.
That team was coached by Humana-Paredes’ father.

Switzerland beat Australia in straight sets in the
third-place game earlier Friday night to earn the bronze medal.

Nina Brunner and Tanja Huerberli beat Tokyo silver medalists Taliqua Clancy and
Mariafe Artacho del Solar 21-17, 21-15 in 39 minutes.
It was the second Summer Games in a row that a Swiss
team took the bronze medal, coming three years after
Joana Heidrich and Anouk Vergé-Dépré placed third in Tokyo.

On the men’s side, Sweden was set to face Germany for gold on Saturday night, with Norway and
Qatar playing for the bronze.

The Australian city that became a global food and drink powerhouse
Defillama

Four friends posed for a photo on vacation in 1972. Over 50 years later, they recreated it
Aerodrome Finance

In the photo, four young women walk arm in arm, smiling and laughing, on a beach promenade. They’re dressed in mini skirts and flip flops, and there’s what looks like a 1960s Ford Corsair in the background. This is clearly a snapshot from a bygone era, but there’s something about the picture — the womens’ expressions, their laughs — that captures a timeless and universal feeling of joy, youth and adventure.

For the four women in the photo, Marion Bamforth, Sue Morris, Carol Ansbro and Mary Helliwell, the picture is a firm favorite. Taken over 50 years ago on a group vacation to the English seaside town of Torquay, Devon, the photo’s since become symbolic of their now decades-long friendship. Whenever they see the picture, they’re transported back to the excitement of that first trip together.

“It’s always been our memory of Torquay,” Sue Morris tells CNN Travel. “The iconic photograph — which is why I got the idea of trying to recreate it.”

‘The iconic photograph’
Bamforth, Morris, Ansbro and Helliwell were 17 when the photo was taken, “by one of these roving photographers that used to roam the promenade and prey on tourists like us,” as Morris recalls it.

It was the summer of 1972 and the four high school classmates — who grew up in the city of Halifax, in the north of England — were staying in a rented caravan in coastal Devon, in southwest England. It was a week of laughs, staying out late, flirting with boys in fish and chip shops, sunburn, swapping clothes, sharing secrets and making memories by the seaside.

Fast forward to 2024 and Bamforth, Morris, Ansbro and Helliwell remain firm friends. They’ve been by each other’s sides as they’ve carved out careers, fallen in love, brought up families and gone through heartbreak and grief.

Russell Crowe has argued that the rise of independent
politicians are better representing the views of everyday Australians, unlike the two-party-dominated system in the United States.

The Oscar-winning actor made the claim in response to podcast host Joe Rogan  complaining that Americans were ‘completely trapped in the two-party system’.

‘We have the same sort of situation, but we have a very interesting thing
that’s happening in Australia at the moment, which is the rise of independents,
‘ Crowe countered.

‘The main parties have to deal with the fact those independents have
to bring a non-party-line series of points to the argument.

‘And it’s working well. It’s working for us. In that it’s making both of the main parties re-examine who they are and what they stand for.

Rogan mused ‘we could use that here, for sure’, highlighting how US politics is
completely dominated by the Democrat and Republican parties.

There are other parties, including the Green, Libertarian, and Reform parties, but these
receive vanishingly few votes in comparison.

Independent candidates can also stand and have been known to
perform well on occasion.

The Oscar-winning actor (pictured ) made the observation in response to podcast host Joe Rogan who complained that Americans were ‘completely trapped in the two-party system’

Joe Rogan (pictured) is one of the most powerful media
figures in the world

Civil rights opponent George Wallace ran a third-party campaign in the
1968 US election which saw him garner 10 million votes and take five
southern states, while another disaffected Democrat, Strom Thurmond, in 1948 carried
four southern states on a similarly racist platform but with only a
million votes.

The nephew of a president, Robert F. Kennedy Jr., was poised to get on the ballot in dozens of states as an independent candidate before he pulled out
and backed Republican Donald Trump.

He has now been appointed Health secretary in Trump’s incoming cabinet.

Trump himself had previously belonged to the Reform
Party.

The former New York property developer had even considered running for president in the 2000 election under the banner of that movement
– formed by former third-party presidential candidate Ross Perot, who won 19 per cent of the popular vote in 1992
but gained no electoral college votes.

Perot was the most popular minority party candidate since former Republican president Teddy Roosevelt in 1912 ran as
the Bull Moose Party candidate – carrying six states including California
and coming second ahead of Republican William Taft.

Australia has seen a rise in recent years of nominally independent politicians
who have taken votes away from the two traditional parties of Labor and the
Liberal-National coalition

This situation is helped by a strong Green party who
now have 12 senators and four members in the House of Representatives.

Zali Steggall (pictured) became the first ‘teal’ independent to
achieve huge success when she ousted former prime minister Tony Abbott in his seat in Sydney’s
northern beaches at the 2019 election

Meanwhile, independent candidates who run on strong climate platforms but are fiscally conservative have been labelled
‘teal’ candidates.

This is because they have combined their ‘green’ views on climate
with the traditional ‘blue’ approach of the centre-right Liberal
Party on economics.

Zali Steggall became the first teal independent to achieve huge success when she
ousted former prime minister Tony Abbott in his seat in Sydney’s northern beaches
at the 2019 election.

In similar fashion, Monique Ryan won the traditionally Liberal seat from former treasurer Josh Frydenberg at the 2022 election.

She was one of seven teals elected, swelling the
lower house crossbench to 16, with this tally including the four Greens, three conservative independents and progressives Andrew Wilkie and Helen Haines.

Crowe’s three-hour conversation with Rogan, which was
first aired in August, has recently resurfaced in teal social media adverts.

They are being pushed by Melbourne philanthropist Simon Holmes à
Court, who founded Climate 200, which has given campaign funding to some teal candidates.

Not all the 12 independents elected in 2022 were
teals, however.

Maverick independent Bob Katter has just celebrated 50 years in parliament (pictured:
being congratulated by prime minister Anthony Albanese)

Dai Lee, a former state Liberal candidate, defeated former Labor frontbencher and former NSW Labor premier Kristina Keneally in the south-west Sydney seat of Fowler.

And, of course, maverick Bob Katter who has just celebrated 50 years in parliament,
spending 20 years as a Queensland state MP before
serving the past three decades in federal parliament as the MP for the regional
far north Queensland electorate of Kennedy.

Among his many mad-hat policies over the years include a bid to
teach school kids how to fire rifles and a desire to build a missile shield across northern Australia.

The House of Representatives crossbench grew to 17 in late 2022 when Andrew Gee quit the Nationals
in protest at its opposition to the Indigenous Voice to Parliament.

The Greens and independents make up 11 per cent of the 151-member lower house
– the highest proportion of non major party MPs since Federation in 1901.
